We are bringing a bit of local history right to your favorite neighborhood storefronts. Keep your eyes peeled, we’ve put together new window exhibits designed to share the rich stories, heritage, and character of our community.
First up, the history of the Hardware Hank Building located at 502 South Main Street, check out the display in the south window.
As one of the first hardware stores to anchor Cedar Grove, Andrew Vander Laan's establishment on the west side of South Main Street was a vital pillar of the early community until a disastrous fire swept through and destroyed the original building in 1929. Out of those ashes rose the structure that today houses Hardware Hank—a landmark location that has maintained continuous hardware operations, marching steadily toward a 100-year legacy in 2029.
Milestones
1929: A disastrous fire destroys Vander Laan Hardware; building is subsequently rebuilt at current location, previously located across the street.
Year Unknown: Henry Obbink and John Reusink take over the business, specializing in tin work, plumbing, and store management.
1939: The store is purchased by Garret Ebbers and the Ebbers family.
1950–1968: George Ebbers purchases the business from G.H. Ebbers & Sons.
1968–1978: Virgil and Delores Nonhof purchase the business from Ebbers
1978 - 1983: Business is purchased by Thomas Zachman.
1983–2007: Glen Ten Dolle and Paul Huenink take over, expanding operations to include selling and installing carpeting and floor coverings alongside traditional hardware.
2007-Current: Bruce and Barb Lukens purchase the hardware store and currently operate the business.
